St Philip’s is delighted to welcome Peter Burney as Deputy Church Warden. Peter, who has taken over from Callum Stewart, is now working alongside Anne Steele.
Peter has known St Philip’s since the 1960s, when his family moved into the area, but education and work called him away. He has been a regular member in more recent years, describing St Philip’s as “my local. I like the atmosphere; it seems a very happy place and it suits my temperament”.
As Professor of Respiratory Epidemiology and Public Health at the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College, Peter researches the extent and causation of chronic respiratory disease globally. Indeed, it was Peter’s gap year experience of working in a South African mission hospital that gave him the medical bug, saying “I realised that public health was what I most wanted to do”.
Looking forward to his new role as Deputy Church Warden, Peter says: “Apart from stopping the vicar running off with the silverware, I think our role is supportive. I feel there is great energy in St Philip’s, and if I can do anything to facilitate the next phase of its growth I shall be very happy.”
